Autism Spectrum Disorders

What are they?

Autistic Disorder- A child is now more frequently diagnosed by age 3. The early signs of autism are the inability to look in the eyes of others, the inability to function in a group, the flapping of the hands or twisting of the fingers. Delay in speech, lack of interest in others and lack of emotional attachment.

Asperger’s Disorder- A child might not be diagnosed by age 3 because their delays are not as severe. They are very bright and show very high IQ’s, especially for non-verbal skills.
These children show very similar traits as the Autistic child. Although they can function adequately in a school setting, they would be considered “odd”, “weird”, to others because they do not fit the mold of social society.

Rett’s Disorder- A child will grow at a normal developmental age and then after five month of a child’s life, will start losing the ability to use their hands. The inability to engage socially, and coordination will follow in the months to come.

Childhood Disintergrative Disorder- The inability to play, no bladder or bowel control, no social skills, and no motor skills, are just a few of the symptoms.

PDD-NOS - Children are diagnosed later and the diagnoses is not as severe. The children are more likely to have more verbal and non-verbal effective communication, yet they have the autistic features.
